A leader in terms of the various important innovations it has provided in the production of Sangiovese di Montalcino, Altesino was quickly able to establish itself and become a reference point throughout the famous area of the Montalcino region. In 2002, Elisabetta Gnudi Angelini bought the 200-acre Altesino winery, situated to the east of the village of Montalcino. The winery is located on the historic site of Palazzo Altesi and, in 1975, was the first to use the concept of cru, with the famous Brunello Montosoli. In 1979, the Altesino winery was also the site of the first experiments with new barrels. Some of the Altesino wine cellars are still to this day housed within the walls of the historic Palazzo Altesi, whilst at the rear of the vineyard and benefiting from a natural slope, functional and modern facilities have been built for the fermentation, refinement and bottling of high-quality wines, such as, for example, Brunello di Montalcino or rosso di Montalcino. Today, the winery is made up of 108 acres, divided up into crus of Altesino, Macina, Castelnuovo (in the district of Velona), Pianezzine and Montosoli.
