An extremely famous winery in the picturesque village of Bolgheri in Tuscany, the Tenuta dell’Ornellaia needs no introduction, so great are its quality and popularity. For the uninitiated, it was in 1981, in the heart of the Bolgheri appellation, that the Tenuta dell’Ornellaia was founded, 60km south of Pisa, on the west coast of Tuscany.

The appellation in itself is relatively recent, as it has only existed since 1994. As such, it was on a plot of traditional farmland, not dedicated to winegrowing, that one Mario Incisa della Rocchetta, landowner and brother-in-law of Nicolò Antinori (father of the famous Tenuta Antinori), decided to plant 2.5 acres of vines in the 1950s: and the legend of Sassicaia was born!

Given the immeasurable success of this wine, one of Nicolò’s sons in turn decided to make his own wine in the tradition of Sassicaia.By using the production methods of the Super-Tuscans (the name given to wines from this region produced according to the Médoc tradition), he planted Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. In 1988, the first 1985 vintage of the eponymous Ornellaia wine hit the market. And it was an overnight success!Regularly earning the highest scores from the biggest Italian and international critics for its range of four wines (Masseto, Ornellaia, Le Serre Nuove and Le Volte), the Tenuta dell’Ornellaia is currently in the hands of talented oenologist Axel Heinz, who, since the 2005 vintage, has continued to develop even further the quality and peculiarity of the wines of this famous Tuscan winery.
