Yecla is a "Denominacion de Origen Protegida (DOP)" for wines produced around the town of Yecla in Spain.
Located north of Murcia, Yecla is surrounded by other DOPs, Jumilla in the southwest, Almansa in the north and Alicante in the east. The vineyards are located at an altitude of between 535 and 800 meters above sea level in a transition zone between the La Mancha plateaus and the Mediterranean Sea. The soils are rather limestone with a sandy and clayey surface. The climate is continental with long, cold winters and very hot summers.
The main grape variety of this appellation is Monastrell. This variety is capable of withstanding long periods of drought, during which its yield decreases considerably, and it recovers when the weather conditions are favourable again. (Alfavin.ch)
