Tenuta dell'Ornellaia, the famous winery in the village of Bolgheri in Tuscany, is one of those wineries whose popularity needs no introduction. It all began in 1981, when the estate was founded by Lodovico Antinori of the Antinori family, who were also winegrowers. The history of this family business is closely linked to two other major vintages in the region: Sassicaia and Solaia. At the time, Lodovico wanted to produce his own wine capable of competing with those of his cousin Nicolo Incisa and his brother Piero Antinori, producers of Sassicaia and Solaia respectively.

Managed by Robert Mondavi Winery for a number of years, Tenuta dell'Ornellaia is now in the hands of the Frescobaldi family. Ferdinando Frescobaldi is the current president, who has entrusted the running of the estate to the talented Axel Heinz. Ornellaia, the flagship cuvée, was first produced in 1985.  A few years later, a more modern winery was built and the Bellaria estate north of Bolgheri was acquired.

Tenuta dell'Ornellaia is located on the coast of the Tyrrhenian Sea in the northern Maremma region, around 80 km south of Pisa. Covering around one hundred hectares, the vineyard is divided into two areas: one around the historic winery, and the second, Bellaria, which is a little further north and covers around sixty hectares.

Tenuta dell'Ornellaia's wines have won international acclaim from wine professionals and connoisseurs alike, making it one of Tuscany's finest winegrowing regions.
